The curious case of US Elections -2020

Ever since the commencement of presidential race I was wondering about the curiosity that drove the world to have a fish eye on the results. No wonder the memes started pouring in.

So, what exactly were we looking for ? Was Mrs.Kamala Harris the ‘X’ factor? Or Mr.Trump’s fate created the peculiarity? Honestly, I am not sure. But what is in-store for the future is something that I can point out.

The India-China Standoff :

Some feel that since the public sentiment in US is not in favor of China, Biden will have no option but to come together with India to check China’s march. “It is compulsion of global politics,”

H1B Visas:

The promises made by Joe Biden are heart-warming, but , as the Trump administration has tightened the rules, it may not be very easy for Biden to reverse some of the approaches adopted in the last four years.

NRC and Article 370:

Biden has been “disappointed by the measures that the Government of India has taken with the implementation and aftermath of the National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Assam and the passage of the Citizenship (Amendment) Act into law”, the Biden campaign’s policy paper had said.

Markets :

A look at how various sectors traded over the last three days shows that banking and the IT index have been biggest gainers. Against a Sensex rise of 4.1 per cent over last three days, the banking index has jumped 7.8 per cent and the IT index has risen by 3.9 per cent. Many feel that Biden would be better for IT industry and professionals.

Since equity markets are risk markets, if you can lower volatility on policy front and make it a bit more predictable, it is good for the markets.

Military :

Although (then) Senator Obama was initially hesitant to support the Indo-US nuclear deal, Biden led the charge and worked with both Democrats and Republicans, to approve the nuclear deal in the US Congress in 2008.

The Obama-Biden Administration also named India a “Major Defense Partner” – a status approved by the US Congress – which made it easier to share advanced and critical technology to India to strengthen defense ties. This was crucial since it was for the first time that any country was given this status, outside of the US’s traditional alliance system.

In-short, there is a sense that a more predictable leader is better geopolitically and for the global equity markets.
