Some journeys call you back, not for the destination, but for the moments they etch on your soul. My return to the Sleeping Buddha, the majestic Kanchenjunga point, was one such journey—this time, not with the camaraderie of six but on a solo adventure into nature’s grandeur.
And let me tell you,if the Himalayas ever whispered secrets, they chose solitude to do so.

Setting the Mood: From Drizzles to Peaks
It all began at Bangalore’s T2 terminal, an architectural marvel that could make even the most restless traveler pause in awe. Light drizzles kissed the glass panes, amplifying the anticipation of the adventure ahead. But Air India Express ensured this trip began with a twist—flight delays. While I’ve learned to embrace the unpredictability of travel, their inefficiency in communicating weather updates left much to be desired. Safe to say, Air India Express may not see me again.
From IXB to Mirik: A Scenic Prelude
A familiar yet ever-enchanting friend awaited me at Bagdogra. Without missing a beat, we hit the road to Mirik. The journey was a visual symphony—lush green tea estates rolled out like emerald carpets and jaw-dropping scenic views begged to be captured. As the icy winds set my teeth chattering, the warmth of freshly steamed momos and aromatic Darjeeling tea became more than just food; they were comforting in edible form.
Lapchaghat Nature Resort: A Hidden Gem in the Himalayas
Nestled amidst pristine wilderness, Lapchaghat Nature Resort is where heaven meets Earth. Waking up here is a poetic experience—golden rays of the rising sun painting the Sleeping Buddha and Kanchenjunga in hues of amber and white. The viewpoint, just a short walk from the resort, feels like nature’s gallery, curated for dreamers and wanderers alike. It’s not just a stay; it’s a communion with the mountains.
Chill in the Air, Warmth in My Heart
Evenings in Mirik Park revealed the simplicity of small-town life. Locals mingled in what seemed to be the town’s social nucleus. The frosty winds convinced me to purchase a pair of gloves for INR 100—a small price to pay for warmth against the Himalayan chill. By the time I reached Lepchajagat, the mercury had dropped to a bone-chilling 2°C. Snuggled in blankets with Netflix and warm food, I called it a night, ready for the magic of the next day.

The Morning of a Lifetime: The Sleeping Buddha Awakes
The first rays of sunlight kissed the snow-capped peaks, creating a golden spectacle that words fail to capture. The Sleeping Buddha lay undisturbed, and I sat entranced on the terrace, letting the silence speak. It’s moments like these that remind you of nature’s unmatched artistry.

Picture this: Darjeeling below, another range of mountains above it, and finally, the Kanchenjunga peak. Snow crowned only the highest peak, leaving the lower ranges in stark contrast. It was as though clouds had descended onto the mountains—a visual marvel I will carry to my grave.

A Colonial Throwback: Takdah Club Bungalow
Descending into Takdah felt like stepping into a time machine. The colonial charm of Takdah Club Bungalow, with its vintage furniture and sprawling gardens, evoked a sense of nostalgia. The British-era architecture, surrounded by misty hills and vibrant tea gardens, offered more than just a stay—it was an experience steeped in history and tranquility.
As I savored a sumptuous lunch amidst this heritage retreat, I couldn’t help but reflect on the timeless beauty of the place. Takdah isn’t just a stop on a journey; it’s a story waiting to be lived.
Why This Journey Was Different
Unlike my first trip, this solo adventure forced me to confront every moment head-on. From the biting winds of Mirik to the blinding brilliance of Kanchenjunga, the experience became intensely personal—a fierce battle between my spirit and the mountains. The Sleeping Buddha stands unchanged, yet my perspective has been radically transformed. It’s not just about laying eyes on the peaks; it’s about grappling with their imposing grandeur and unearthing the raw essence of yourself in their daunting shadow.

Whispering Peaks and Golden Rays: My Final Ode to 2024
As I stood in reverent silence, watching the first golden light gently caress the majestic Sleeping Buddha, it struck me with a fervor that journeys like these transcend mere destinations; they etch profound pieces of life within our very souls. From the sacred spiritual lanes of Kashi to the awe-inspiring architectural marvels of Hampi, the blissful shores of Goa, the dazzling futuristic wonders of Dubai, the tranquil, lush backwaters of Kerala, and finally, here, enveloped in the serene embrace of the Himalayas in Siliguri—2024 has emerged as a year of unparalleled transformation and awakening.
This solo trip was the culmination of a year that demanded exploration—not just of places, but of self. What better way to bid farewell to 2024 than to sit under the shadow of Kanchenjunga, letting the mountains whisper their timeless stories?
